Over the next two months, I'll try to introduce you to the Beargrease Race team. While we don't know for sure who will make the team yet, we have a pretty good idea. We've narrowed it down to 16 dogs. Judy Blume came to us as Judy Bloom, but we didn't understand that spelling. If you're going to name a dog Judy Blume, seems you'd want to name her after the author and spell it as such, right? So we do. She came from Jason Barron's kennel originally and was on at least one of his Iditarod teams and his winning Beargrease team. It was somewhat serendipitous that we got her--not really knowing that much about her... but we didn't really know anything about racing sled dogs at that point.
Anyway, we bred her to a dog named Clumber--on a friend's suggestion--and she had six amazing pups that make up the core of our kennel now. She is also grandma to another 7 dogs in our kennel. So we see her as the matriarch. She's 8 going on 9, and now living in our house. She pretty much sticks to this chair here, but we still have her run with the team. Yesterday she ran 30+ miles and now she'll sleep in the chair for two days. We aren't positive she'll make the team, but it would be great. Her veteran experience is unmatched in the rest of our young dogs, and she could be just what we need to finish, the dog we go to to get the job done.
Interesting tidbit about Judy--she loves kale. She went out and mowed my kale patch to the ground this fall. She still chews through neck lines if we put her back in the team instead of lead, but other than that, she is one of the sweetest dogs around.
